Bienvenue a la Roach Motel

Back on the road - destination Lyon.

We were supposed to pop by Meursault, but we completely missed the stop.  So we did a straight drive to Lyon.  On approaching the city, we realized we were still 30 mins away from our hotel and so we decided to change our reservation.  Especially as we were only in Lyon for one night.

The hotel we got booked into, while in the heart of old Lyon, we now affectionately call Roach Motel.  Upon entering the hotel our concierge Claudette questioned us as to whether we would like to see our room first.  At this a sense of panic struck us all at the same time, but we decided to investigate nonetheless.

As we ascended the never ending spiral staircase complete with aging, matted dorm room style, beer stained and vomit infused carpet, our fears began to rise.  Topping this off were the darkened corridors to which lighting was only available when we opened our doors.  Although even this was limited as the light did not stay on long enough for us to turn the key.

On entering our new residence it became quite clear that our last occupants had been those with 6 legs.  Nevertheless, desperate times cause for desperate measures and we were only here for one night.  After all if we have learned nothing on this trip, there is nothing that a bottle of wine can't fix.  Period.

Because of the steep winding stairs to get to our room, Ruth and I decided to prepare a separate bag instead of lugging our suitcases up the stairs.  So we did this in the parking lot where I had parked the car.  If anyone was watching the security cameras in the parking lot, I'm sure they would have had a good laugh.

Despite our hotel, Lyon is actually quite nice.  Cobbled stones, old architecture, little streets with boutiques selling all sorts of things from jars of honey to bon bons to clothes.  It was very nice to stroll among the streets and soak up the vibe of this city.

As with every city we have seen in France so far, there was a Notre Dame and lots of different other churches that just poked out of the different side streets.  Very pretty indeed.
